Today let’s look at Mark Maggiori. A friend turned me on to Mark’s Instagram account, and I was hooked. I’ve written about him before in this weekly series, so today’s Art Wednesday contains pieces I haven’t posted before.

Maggiori, Boys of the Land, 2019
Mark Maggiori is a Frenchman living in the American Southwest. He became fascinated with the American west at 15 during a family road trip across the states. He moved to the states in his 30’s.

Maggiori, Father Daughter, 2020
Mark started painting western scenes at the age of 36. His bio notes “in the space of just a few short years Mark rose through the ranks to become one of the premier Western artists working today.”

Maggiori, Heaven's Gate, 2020
To hone his craft, Mark “started to work more in plein air, he spent time on ranches with cowboys and on horseback to acquaint himself more with the Western way of life.”

Maggiori, Once Upon a Time, 2020
I am so drawn to the American West. I love Louis L’Amour novels (which I’ve written about here.) I think it’s the paradox of complexity and simplicity, of beauty and danger co-existing.

Maggiori, Riders of the Coyote Moon, 2019
Mark Maggiori has done some amazing work during the pandemic, including a series capturing black cowboys, who are rarely featured in Western art, but were nonetheless very much a part of it.

Maggiori, Sons of Blue Lake, 2021
A few summers back, my family took a road trip across the states through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. It was beautiful and stark country. I was not prepared for the beauty.

Maggiori, What Lies Within Us, 2021
